Introducing The Duff Drill: A Comprehensive Test of Firearms Fundamentals

In the world of firearms training, drills are essential for honing skills and ensuring proficiency. This drill is designed to challenge and improve multiple aspects of shooting fundamentals, including drawing from the holster, reloading, shooting on the move, and accuracy at varying distances.

Overview of The Duff Drill

The Duff Drill is structured into four stages, each targeting specific shooting skills and executed at distances of 7 and 10 yards using a PDF target. Here’s a breakdown of the stages:

Stage 1: Draw and Engage (7 Yards)

  • Objective: Test your draw speed and initial shooting accuracy.
  • Execution: On the beep, draw your firearm from the holster and fire 6 rounds. Perform a slide lock reload and fire an additional 6 rounds. Ensure all rounds are within the A-Zone of the target.

Stage 2: Draw, Fire, and Retreat (7 to 10 Yards)

  • Objective: Evaluate your ability to engage a target while on the retreat and execute a reload.
  • Execution: On the beep, draw from the holster and fire 5 rounds. Immediately retreat to the 10-yard line. While retreating, perform a reload and fire 5 more rounds at the 10 yard line. Maintain accuracy and ensure all rounds are within the A-Zone.

Stage 3: Turn and Engage (10 Yards)

  • Objective: Assess your speed and accuracy in moving to a position and engaging the target.
  • Execution: At the 15-yard line, On the beep move to the 10 yard line position, and fire 5 rounds. All rounds should be within the A-Zone of the target.

Stage 4: Advance and Engage (10 Yards)

  • Objective: Test your ability to shoot accurately while advancing towards a target.
  • Execution: On the beep from the 10 yard line, fire 10 rounds while advancing towards the target. Ensure you are in motion when firing and that all rounds are within the A-Zone.

Tools Needed

To perform The Duff Drill, you will need:

  1. A reliable handgun with two magazines
  2. A target stand with the PDF target
  3. A shot timer
  4. 37 Rounds 
  5. The ability to measure distance 
  6. The ability to read 

Rules of Engagement

  • All shooting must be done from a holster (either concealment or OWB).
  • Rounds must be within the A-Zone of the target.
